Indonesia is the longest and largest archipelago in the world with many different communities from Sabang to Merauke. The many tribes and cultures of Indonesia make some of these tribes become unfamiliar for Indonesian people. Introductions and explanations of the unfamiliar tribes and cultures in Indonesia can be narrated through films. Besides from being an entertainment, film can educate and raise social awareness for the audience, especially in documentary films. The short documentary of Orang Laut is a movie that tells about the cultural identity of Suku Laut in Lingga Islands, and explains the position of Suku Laut community life that has changed from nomadic occupying the seas to now being moved to the land. In this essay, the author describes filmmaking process from concept development to the final conclusions of the movie. The movie closes with summary of the process of Suku Laut people's life until now.
